Hi Ralph,
Rover (Land Rover) designed the camshafts to suit the engines, hence the reason the 4.0 camshaft is different to the 4.6. The latter also featured so it is my understanding the only asymmetrical camshaft fitted to a Rover V8 engine from the factory.
Unless the 4.6 has had appropriate work undertaken to the cylinder heads, fitting a camshaft with a longer duration than what was specified by the factory is really a pointless exercise.
You also need to consider as to whether the engine is running with a manual or automatic transmission.
Ron.

That is a fair assessment, but the 4.0 cam seems to have slightly less lift despite having more duration and running what appears to be a tighter LSA.Ralphh85 wrote:sorry to drag up old thread but just now tryign to buy a cam,
by the look sof it the 4.0L cam could be used as an upgrade to the 4.6 judging by duration??
is this a done thing? or am i being stupid?
Ralph
But it does look like a better cam
Is it actually worth buying a totally standard factory cam though ? it would need to be very cheap
Real Steel's cams are only £130-140 ( and obviously any new cam needs new followers )
yeah shortly after posting i noticed that the lift was down on the 4L.
thing that made me say that was the 4L is similar to the kent cam i was looking at, infact it was more longer duration but like said well down on lift as the kent has more than the 4.6 cam.
real steel/v8 tuner etc are totally put off when i tell them its a P38 engine, i have a feeling they dont stock them, V8 tuner suggested i talk directly to kent or piper,
kent say £219 for a cam so think i will go for that.
follower wise do i need anything special? seen anti pump uo ones int he past but not sure who has them now.
