Hello

I have just noticed the carbs on my disassembled RV8 are not quite the same. The pots and the black screws at the very top are different. I'm not worried about the asthetics since they won't be visible once the engine is fitted, but is this going to cause running issues? I have to admit although I've been researching these carbs I haven't gotten serious yet because I'm way off needing them. Here's a picture of what I mean :

The one on the left has what looks like a dashpot and damper off a later HIF44, it's certainly not original on those HS6's. Personally I'd never use HS6's, if I wanted to stay with SU's I'd use pre-emission control HIF6's from a Rover P6B.

They are, but one of them will need the 'hand' swapping, the linkages need modifying, and you have to port the inlet manifold.

Worth it for a tuned 4.6, but probably not worth the bother for anything smaller.

I think the one on the left is off a 2600 rover, I had 2 of them and 2 of the others on a Boxer manifold for a while.
Personally I would be more worried about the bl00dy great crack up the bell of the one on the right. However what actually matters is that the venturies are the same size, the holes in the back of the carbs that channel vacuum to above the piston are the same size and flow the same and the throttle plates are the same size. Then you can at least stand a chance of gettin them to work the same with correct springs and by removing the crud.
I think you may have a serious problem with the one on the right though, it looks very worn and I think someone has dropped something big and heavy on it at some point, infact It could be that they were a pair at some point, someone dropped something on both and replaced the really obviously broken parts on the one on the left and not the whole carb . . . . I think I would look for a pair of 2"sus and rob those two for the linkages and anyother bits needed before binning them.
