Rv8 alternator bracket

Got a Cobra rep' with a SD1 carb engine fitted, I've had to modify the alternator bracket so the alternator sits above the bracket instead of hanging below. Works ok but not looking so good.
How many vehicles with a similar engine might have a suitable alternator bracket so that I could use a "standard" part.
Thanks for looking.

There are more varieties of alternator mounting than you could shake a stick at. :D

The earliest version as fitted to the P5 and P6 had the alternator mounted high up, IIRC.

How about a John Eales bracket, very neat.

I have one on my TVR.

Its the P6 bracket that I have on mine to mount the alternator high. Be warned though that the crank and alternator pulleys will not line up as they are set further out on the SD1. The P5 bracket mounts high as well but its in a different place than the P6.

Hi Marki,
Nice Pictures.
Just one question though.
I've always assumed that multi v belts would slip without a tensioner.
I have a tensioner on my engine and since I fitted a 150amp alternator, it just occasionally slips after a cold startup.

Cheers Denis

That's not quite correct. P5B's always had the 11AC alternator, and has exactly the same bracket as the early P6B, which also used the 11AC, but when the P6B changed to 17/18ACR it got a different bracket, and the alternator had to be swung outwards to clear the rocker cover, it wouldn't sit directly in front of it like the 11AC did, but they're both above the bracket on the front of the RH head, but different brackets.

It has a tensioner it just isn't in the picture because I hadn't made it at that point. Its basically an old skool bar with a left and right hand thread with rose joints on either end so you simply screw it in or out and lock it. It goes from the top of the water pump to alternator.

OK Harvey you got me, I obviously never managed to get a P6B bracket in my hand to know it was no good.

So, it's an initial means of tensioning?
with no spring loaded/self adjusting tensioner like on the factory serp multi v belt motors.

Not if tensioned correctly the Japs have been using multi ribbed belts since the early 80's with no tensioner, i have the JE alt bracket which does away with the tensioner and no issues whatsoever as expected. :D Image

Hmmm! Should of checked on P heads forum first  This One seems to have been thrashed to death on there.
I'm always interested in cleaning unneeded bits from the engine bay.
Not much room in a twin turbo v8 Austin Devon engine bay.
Cheers Denis

Similar to this? Though this was made for an SD1.
