T5 gear lever position

Hi all,
Ive just bought a T5 that was from a TVR Tomara to replace my LT77.
The issue is that the gear lever will end up behind the dashboard
Do I take it that the rear end can be swapped over for another one with the lever in the correct place, as ideally I need the lever in the middle of the rear section, mine is right at the front of the rear section.
If it can be done, where is the best place to find one, as I dont want to buy a whole gearbox if I can help it.
thanks
Phil

I'm replacing my R380 with a T5, Gearboxman are building it for me, they sent me a drawing with dimensions of the Cossi T5 and the TVR version.
The Cossi version has the lever 29 inches back from the face of the gearbox, the TVR is 25 inches back.
My R380 has the same remote unit that my old LT77 had (I guess a short remote), the gear lever is 23 inches back. So my new setup using a TVR T5 will push my gear lever 2 inches further back.
EDIT...OH 5hit, I think I measured the 23 inches from the face of the bellhousing where it joins the block not the face of the gearbox, and I'm in Spain, and they are building the gearbox for me now!!!
EDIT...EDIT, My mate has just measured the distance from the front of his LT77 back to the gear lever, he measured 23 inches.

I think TVR use the Jeep version of the T5 to get the remote in that position, I do know there are over 200+ versions of the T5, I think to remove the tail housing, I think you have to destroy 5th gear, I know that used to be the way to do it, there may be other ones that dont.

Thanks for all the info.
I will have to give Paul a ring about that extension unit. He doesnt live far from me.
My LT77 measures 610mm from the bell housing to the lever, where as the TVR measures around 460mm, so I need around 150mm or maybe a little less added.
I really do hope it can be done without breaking the 5th gear
thanks

Rather than edit my last post I thought that I'd better put up a new post.
I was reading the drawing which shows both versions of the gearbox incorrectly, the measurements were from the tip of the input shaft not the face of the gearbox.
So the TVR box has the lever 25" from the tip of the shaft and the Cossi box is 29". The input shaft for both boxes is 7" long.
I think that the R380 and LT77 input shaft is about 7" long which will place the gear lever about 30" back from it.
I have spoken just spoken to Gearboxman, they are now making me a Cossi version but it sounds like the close ratio gear set and the main casing now need to be changed. I asked them whether a TVR box can be converted to a Cossi box, not really was the answer, there are too many parts that are different

Well that’s interesting as Bernie at CTS converted mine. Well he told me he did unless he swapped it for a Cossie box.
If I recall correctly 5th gear often breaks when being removed so that was replaced along with tail shaft and tail housing. The TVR parts are hard to get so Bernie was quite pleased to just swap the parts and charge me cost for rebuild and the cog.
The TVR box is WC, not sure the Cossie is so you have me wondering now.
Kind Regards

Aha, it was Bernie that I was talking to, I think that it can be converted as long as you have all the parts of which there are quite a few, which I guess they do have. The output shaft has a different spline count between the two versions so if you already have the propshaft then that will need replacing.

I had same problem on my Rush so I simply made a remote extension - not really difficult. Several Rush owners have done this several different ways. PM me with e-mail address if you want photos of several options.

Rather then start a new thread,as my question is similiar,I thought
I'd ask it here !
Mine's a Cosworth T5, but at the moment I'm in the process of setting my engine further back into the chassis.
What I want to know will the TVR shifter mechanism fit my box ?
Where could I get one from ?
Or do I make my own remote like I've seen on some TVRs ?
I have Quaife internals in mine,so don't really want to buy another box !
Thanks in advance

The cosworth T5 output shaft may be a different dia to a TVR box and changing the rear housing (to get a suitable gear ever location) would also require a different slide yoke bush in the housing.
You will also need the selector rod that matches the Housing.
You would probably need to buy a complete TVR box to source these items.
Given the Quaife internals and therefore more unknowns, I would settle for making my own external shift mechanism.
Cheers Denis

A guy on the Dax Rush forum just went through this Cossie / WC loop and there are several differences including the main input bearing and shaft size.
TVR WC below, Cossie on top
