Injector cut-outs

I've got a new pair of cylinder heads without the injector cut-outs. The manifold gasket shows approx where they go - but can anyone give some further details? Obviously, I'd like to do this before removing the old heads.

As the inlet tracks have been opened up you may not even need the cut outs, I guess a bit of measuring is required in order to find out.

Is that part of the mods? They don't look like they've been touched - I've removed a lip round a few of them.

But I can draw out a template from the pics Chris posted, and see if it has.

Here's a drawing that might be a help to others. No guarantee it's micron perfect. :D

After all that, was chatting to a pal who used to have a Rangie, and he had a pair of 3.9 heads lying around. So I've just collected one so I can see the cut-out for real.

What is interesting is they appear to have a slightly different profile to the roof of the inlet port to the heads I've just bought - they appear to be opened out after an initial hump. The square hole on the face is the same. Are there different castings? The Burgess site implies he only uses SD1 castings or later.

The part numbers on the castings are the same ERC 0216, although the actual lettering is different.

Other think is I've measure the distance between the head face and the platform above the inlet face which appears to be a machined reference.

My new heads are 62.28 /62.45mm, the 3.9 one 63.3mm Does this mean they are meant for composite gaskets?

Hi Dave.
According to my book, The dimension is 63.5 mm for steel shim gasket and 62.56mm for a composite gasket.

Your new heads may have been skimmed of course ?

Cheers Denis

Indeed. Here are the dimensions for a composite gasket head:

Right - both my 'new' heads fall within the limits for a re-surfaced composite gasket head. I read elsewhere there are two thickness of composite. How do I know which to buy? It's a 3.5 litre and I shall leave off the outer row of bolts.
