As title.
Anyone done this, not just in a TVR?
This will be mated to the original T5 box so relatively simple, (did I say that!).
Costs, availability, carb or EFI, any info would be appreciated.
Wish list;
400 bhp at the wheels
Carb for simplicity
I have the time, (ish), space and general know how, I just know nothing about them!
Cheers.

I gave £350 for a complete car (Thunderbird) and pinched the engine.
Gone for Edelbrock heads after doing some reading
http://www.airflowresearch.com/articles ... 1/A-P1.htm
http://www.musclemustangfastfords.com/t ... ewall.html
They seem like good value for money but might need stronger springs for a big roller cam.
No idea on how much power it's going to make as it's still in bits
Spec will be.
Edelbrock performer RPM 2 efi intake with 75mm throttle body
Edelbrock performer RPM heads
Comp Cams XE274HR cam
Scat 331 stroker crank
Scat steel rods
Keith Black Icon forged pistons
30 lb hour injectors
1 5/8 home made headers.

What do you reckon the total engine costs will be, just approximately?
Will there be any MOT problems running a carb?

Hi
A bunch called TVR put a ford 289 in the a TVR chassis in the '60s and called it a Tuscan (that was a very scarey car!) I think a 302 would fit in the larger Chassis of the Chimera
As for costs and spec, it as always is a case of power costs money, how fast do you want to go?
400 BHP is pretty easy to do on a 302 reliably and at a reasonalble cost, and road drivable in a light car. I would look for a set of RHS
http://www.racingheadservice.com/Cylind ... minum.aspx or AFR heads (the 205cc inlet port ones) and look for a 302 block and retro fit a roller cam, if it were me I would go for a mechanical roller cam but that is to an extent personal choice.
A good rebuild kit using a lightweight forged crank, I beam rods (light weight ones if you are willing to so spend a little extra) and hyperutetic pistons and a mechanical roller cam of about 235 @.05" inlet duration, maybe a little more on the exhaust lobe on a 110 degree LSA would make a very lively engine giving about 400 to 420 bhp on a 600 vac secondary carb (set up properly) though again personally I would go for 4 barrrel throttle body, dual plane manifold and Extra EFI ECU and waisted spark ignition it would cost about the same as a cark and a MSD spark set up and give you more power and better running.
Realistic costs,
Base engine about £300
Machining block £750
rebuild kit delivered to UK £1600
Heads about £1800 delivered to UK
cam set up £750 to your door
sundries (oil pump gaskets new sump etc) £550
ECU TB and ECU coil packs about £1100
Total about £7850 and it would be a 80K+ mile engine life
You could do it with a re-ring/new shells and timing chain kit if the bores are good, use the existing crank and rods and pistons and spend about £400 on the rebuild kit, do a home hoan, use a flat tappet cam with more timing saving about £350 on that and look out for a set of pro comp heads, saving another £700 or so. You would just about make 380bhp to 400bhp and still be road drivable on a carb total about £3500 reusing everything you can off the engine and using an MSD and a 600 carb and accept a rebuild after 30K miles and be prepared to spend about 2 days on a rolling road to get it through the MOT whilst still making good power.
Best regards
Mike

real steel might have one, and see about getting a book , performance ford v8s on a budget. A 347 is easy enough to do

Hi
It is worth keeping an eye on eurodragster,
http://www.eurodragster.com/classifieds ... category=9
they come up about every other week, along with heads cranks and pistons. There is a 460 short motor on there for £300, but you may have trouble closing hthe bonnet!
Have a hunt back through the listngs if the advert has been up a while you mey fnd a bargin.
Ebay is worth a go, set up a search or two and run it onec a week.
Rods and sods is worth watching.
Best regards

Oh dear Peter. Another one turns to the dark side.
Joking aside i see this could make a lot of sense. Not sure on the dimensions of the 302 but would guess similar to a Chevy small block which IIRC is actually a little thinner than the RV8. I fancy a 383 for my next engine. Forged pistons and a 300 shot obviously
In the meantime dont forget the other temporary option to make up the ponies
Cant wait to see how Barry gets on on Sunday.

Hi
You could also post up on the wanted sections of the Wildbunch forum, on here under wanted, and the wanted sections of most of the usual suspects mentioned above, the GT40 forum, several of the cobra forums (you may end up paying a slight premium on the last 2), however I wouldn't rush to buy the first one to come up, there are plenty about.
Best regrads

Thanks again.
The biggest problem that I can think of is carb is out as the age of the vehical is 1995 and that megasquirt/emerald/whatever and the setup is gonna to be stress and ££££!
Or am I being overly concerned.
Yes Derek, I am having those voices in my head

I dare not add up what mine is going to cost
Heads are around £1100 now
Intake was £570
Stroker kit approx £900
Headers cost a few bob in stainless alone.
There is a roller cam 5.0 on Ebay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FORD-302-5-0- ... 1c2718b22a
It looks like it's from an Explorer as it has the 36-1 ring on the bottom pulley for the EFI
EDIT to add pic of mine mocked up with intake manifold.
It's meant to be worth something like 70 ftlbs over the victor junior carb intake.

Hi
Have a look at the extra efi site, a basic ECU to drive EDIS is £375 for MS2, the rest of the bits, edis8 box, coil packs and sensors will set you back about another £200 if you buy used where it makes sence, a throttle body (4 barrel) is about £130 and the manifold is £250 to £350 new for s decent dual plane.
Most of that costs you would have with a carb set up, certainly the manifold, a carb is going to cost you £250+ a distributor about £280 for a half decent one, then you need a coil, another £60 for an MSD.
You can save money on the manifold buying used, I would not buy a used 4 barrel carb, and you are right you won't get an MOT on a '95 car with cats!
Best regards
Mike

Plus
Plus megasquirt2 is my plan for my conversion
Already got the block with stock forged pistons and rods, not sure if its worth me upgrading, im also after 400 at the wheels
