Distributor choices?

Hi I'm going to be building up my engine soon it's a lr recon 4.0 p38 engine and will be fitted with an intermediate front cover possibly a torquier cam if I can find one and possibly webber 500 carb though again not sure about that yet. Now it'll be going into a 90 that does get used off road but also towing daily runner etc. So I thought I'd get a new dizzy as it seems pointless putting my 140,000 mile 3.5 dizzy on a new engine. So I was thinking of this dizzy here ROVER V8 GENUINE 35DLM8 DISTRIBUTOR, hopefully the link works.!! Any opinions on this versus the other one without the box on the side? Don't want a mallory as they seem nothing but trouble! Cheers for help people.

Been running a magnetic Makkory and an MSD ignition system for the past 2 yrs and not had a moments bother.
Seems to be points = shat
Electric= fine
MSD also do a dizzy for the Rover but that is not cheap.
Pay your money and make your choice .

Well yes - but who would buy a new dizzy with points these days anyway?

Could'nt agree more with Dave.
Pete you should start a market for your modified dizzy's.
You could make a fortune out of it.
cheers

Personally, I can't see any point in sticking with a dizzy except for an old vehicle where looks matter. There are simply to many basic flaws in the design concept. They make a well designed carb. seem positively space age.

Cheers for the complement Mr.Monkey!
I agree that you would have to be mad to buy a points dizzy but I have met one or two people that still think that they are better than an electronic setup. (Being able to fix it at the side of the road blar, blar blar).
I've modified a few Lucas dizzies in order to get the advance curve and timing range that I wanted, they worked OK but since that time I've now given up with the Lucas internals. I now just pull out all of the Lucas gubbins, I then lock the dizzy up, I make and fit a baseplate with an MSD pickup and use this to fire the MSD 6530 unit. Paul and I were quite surprised at the extra power that was released over the Lucas setup. (seat of the pants dyno only).
Recently Paul and I did a bit more work on ours setups, we ran the dizzies in my pillar drill and strobed them, we then modified the Lucas reluctance wheels to get rid of any timing errors....This was alot of work and it did not make much difference! (The tickover may be a bit smoother and we now at least now know that no cylinders differ from number one cylinder in terms of timing).
The third Lucas/MSD setup that I've done will be fitted to a V8 MGB as soon as the weather gets a bit better.
I must say that the MSD 6530 is a great piece of kit in my humble, Paul also uses a MAP sensor on his car which gives 44 degrees advance at cruise, it drops back to 28 degrees at WOT which then advances to 30 degrees at 4800 RPM. He has got 27 MPG from his car with this setup at motorway speeds!

Some time ago I did a bit of playing and replaced the VR pickup on a DLM dizzy with a hall effect one, still using the Lucas trigger wheel. Got a rock stable signal from it under test on the bench - miles better than the VR one.
The actual hall effect IC cost only a couple of quid - but had to have a mount made. I bodged one from a spare open circuit VR sensor.
I still have that dizzy with locked advance lying around somewhere - but it would need the phasing of the rotor arm set correctly. Just a matter of rotating the plate with the sensor - or should be. But decided to go EDIS anyway, so never finished the project, which was intended to be used with JayCar programmable ignition unit. Which I've also still got lying around...

Ok cheers for the replies guys. Suppose it's one of those things that you don't read good posts about things only bad things are posted. So I'll change the question slightly, can anyone recommend a dizzy for me for about the same cost as the lr one that's better? I would rather stay away from points though

Read his posts again and then make your own mind up.
cheers

I run a Scorcher Dissy based around a Ford casing / Holden Bosch internals with a custom advance curve firing a MSD 6AL, along with an MSD Adjustable Timing Control which is a dash-mounted control knob that allows you to adjust the ignition timing +/-15 degrees to compensate for changes in altitude, low octane gas, etc.

If it's on an intermediate front cover .. have you considered something like Megajolt ... wasted spark is so much better than a dissy .. and if you use GEMS coil packs they bolt straight onto the 4.0 Inlet manifold. To be honest the last couple that I have done have worked out to cost about the same as a dissy and coil! and you get fully mapped ignition!
