Ok, after reading the posts in this topic, i sense there are a lot of very knowledgeable folks here. I stand in your shadows guys, you know more than me..

I have a rover vanden plas with a 3.9 230 BHP engine, put together by an aircraft engineer, rebored, rebuilt 30 thousand miles ago, with a webber eidelbrok carb, and uprated clutch, V rated tyres, and at 5400 rpm, was good for 140 mph maybe more.
I want to put it in a rebuilt Triumph Herald convertible i also have, with as few body mods as possible, no big chrome exhausts, as standard looking as i can make it.

So, i am looking at how to get that 1.7 metre wide rear axle ( width with tyres) into the 1.4 - 1.5 metre space in the triumph,

Fostek could sell me a new axle for about £2200, or i could get the rover half shafts re splined and done properly ( if i could find a machine shop capable) and i am thinking since i have the right axle for the engine already, and rover parts are easy to find, then using the rover axle is the way i still want to go.

But, if there is an axle that will go.. or can be made to go, that doesnt cost £2200, in that 1.5 metre space, that i can get easily, then thats why i am here asking...

I want the Triumph to look as standard as possible, but i like those rover wheels, that itself poses a bigger problem of how to get them on the front..

but its axles i need to know about right now. Especially if someone has a link to an engineering company like Fostek ( who dont do rover ) who like Fostek can say " yes, do this"

right think i have found a 8.8 ford lsd axle,
with 31 spline shafts,
the problem now is its 59.75" flange to flange, why can't i have some luck for once
the capri is 52" flange to flange,
anyone on here shortened an axle before? if so who did the resplining???

The lad down the road has bought a 8" with a locker from a mustang 2, its only about 1/2" wider than an atlas, and is also 4 stud, is it worth holding on till another turns up??

isnt the mustang 2 a 8" (7.75 diff) and the explored a 8.8?

right one of my axles is now up for sale and had 4 people already asking if they can collect the weekend if they buy it now

Right, reason for the post.
im getting a bit confussed on what axles are fitted to the mustang with 4 stud shafts,
any one help out and the widths too please?

If its a Mustang axle, and 4 stud its probably from a Mustang 2, IIRC its about 1/2"wider than the capri axle

what size diff does that have mate?
as im after an 8.8 if poss

The 8,8 is a rear loading salsbury axle, its what StevieTurbo is using, but I think it took a few pennies to make it bullet proof,
8" is like a baby 9", but nowhere near as heavy, The best place to check them out would be Curries website, or EBay.com its he US site, plenty of refference on there
