There isn't a law that says to be a mechanic you need to go to school like gas fitters or electricians. Main dealers will be qualified but your back street butchers seldom will be.
Im a electrician by trade. Generally speaking you need to be fully qualified etc to perform this job....
Ive had to work with "electricians"....and I use that term in the loosest possible meaning , who were incapable of wiring, incapable of steel conduit or trunking, and generally totally incompetent at almost any task, an electrician could be expected to have to carry out..

Yet they did apparently have all the relevant qualifications to say otherwise.

In this world were paperwork, NVQ's etc etc etc are supposed to be the be all end all in terms of guaging a persons ability...

That same paperwork is only fit for wiping your arse with.

If you dont have ability, no amount of training will correct that IMO.

Yes I am a qualified electrician too with my part 3. Don't know what its like in Ireland but unfortunately over here there are different levels. Part 1 is what I call a house basher. All they can do is twin and earth through stud partitions. Part 2 is advanced electrician who should be able to handle tube, trunking and any kind of install you care to throw at them. Unfortunately if they served their time with a housing company their still little more than a house basher. Then there is part 3 tech who can design and install anything electrical , a proper electrical engineer. I was lucky in that I spent 11 years working in industrial places so I got plenty practice in everything. You need a tube bender give me a shout  . I was doing hot fibre optic joints back in the day when it was £1000 a joint. Doing networks led me on to doing other things in the computing world which is where I am at now.
