Haven't had time to pull each injector individually yet but it might be looking like some sort of liner issue for a few reasons. It's become a pain to fill the cooling system, with the old engine I had filled it many times after draining it and it never took me long. With this engine it takes hours to get it right.

It nearly overheated yesterday after 4 hours on the motorway, when I got to some roadworks the temperature shot up, luckily there was a place to pull off. The top hose was pretty solid. I opened the expansion cap up and there was a lot of pressure behind it, but the water level didn't rise much. Once I'd filled it back up again and started it there was clouds of steam coming from the exhaust despite the car being fully up to temperature after being driven for 4 hours.

I also noticed lots of steam after putting it back together a few days ago. More than I'd ever seen with the previous engine. It does seem to go away when the engine has been driven for a while though.

Pulled each lead and there wasn't any real difference when any got removed.

I've also got a fault code P0331 which is Knock Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance (Bank B) or as LR words it "Continuous knock bank B". I assume that's just the result of the knocking sound.

Turned out to be the timing was 1 tooth off causing the valves to hit the top of the pistons slightly. Not sure how that happened since I've set up the timing a couple of times now and it worked.

Are you talking about ign or cam timing here ?

Cam timing.

I did wonder at one of your previous posts when you talked about the cam timing being correct or 180 degres out. This is normally an ignition matter. As you have found out, cam timing can be out by any number of cogs.

Did you check your lifter pre-load?

Yeah. Before I put it in I checked it and put some shims in to correct it.
