Also - if placed in front of the heads and behind the rad they would be fed with nice preheated air @ 50-60C which could rob about 15% of the available horses through charge temperature and lower air density.

Get the filters in a area where the supply air will be as cool as you can and then keep it cold.

What you say is true about the pre heated air which is why the cones are where they are.
There will be plenty of cool air coming in from behind the headlights.
.
I think that I will be able to loose loads of the bulk on the housing now I can see what the pipes look like both in place.

I am really looking forward to carving the final shape out and getting to the mould making side of things because that's a bit more in my comfort zone.

Pics to come once that's done.

Thanks again for all the interest you guys are showing.

cheers

Not sure if you understood my suggestion

Leave the filters in the current location for the cool air but instead of mounting them from the radiator, fabricate a bracket from the front of engine or heads.

They will move slightly as the engine rocks on the engine mounts but exactly the same as the carb so total taking can be hard mounted

The filter and intake arrangement would then have three mounting points of contact
1) top of carb
2&3) brackets at front of engine

No sillycone in sight, no jubilee clips etc so more bling!

I am sorry but I did completely misunderstand your idea.
It did cross my mind to maybe mount the brackets from the motor but I felt that it would be better to have the filters as close to the cool air as possible which meant mounting them forward on the rad sides in the cool air flow.
Admittedly the fewer jubilee clips and sections of silicon hose the better but this also gives rise to the problem of taking it all apart at the roadside if required.
Welding the tubes together is going to cause a problem as I found out last night so silicon couplers are going to have to be the way to go.
As for the bling factor well it might be that I paint the tubes black but then again I might not.
My jury is still out on that one and would welcome opinions either for or against

Hi Paul, you should polish the tubes and keep them silver as this will keep the intake charge cooler! (As in temperature AND looks!) :D

I think you should anodise them purple, that would go so well with the orange paint

Hello gents
With the problem still ongoing with my mitt work is much slower on this than I would hope.
However again a small amount has been done tonight with a better idea on how it is going to look as a final shape before moulding begins.
I wanted to feather the wings back into the main body so cut some shapes and bunged them on the sides.
It will all be rounded and tapered from the front to back and I may extend the back a little and then profile that to follow the curve of the bulkhead but will dummy that bit when I get to it as a fully round may well look better.

Sorry there is not more but if the weather is crap tomorrow I may be able to work on this during the day as the mitt problem is not so bad first thing.
Again thanks for all the interest and comments on my nonsense :D

So with my mate the Cave Troll down to assist and take the wee last night we had a good session out in the workshop.
The Troll is a great friend of mine and working together is always a pleasure.
His knowledge and skills are enviable to a point where sometimes I'm left with the thought that I wish I was that clever.

We bonded a couple of very small sections on the rear and down the sides of the housing and then set to shaping.

This foam that I am using to make a plug is incredibly strong as it is specifically used for bulking up areas on fibreglass structures without the need for countless layers of glass.
Basically every MM of foam thickness equates to one layer of 600gsm chopped strand matt.
Even though it is lightweight and very easy to shape it is perfect for this kind of project.
Rough shaping was done with a small handsaw followed by a blast around with some garnet paper.

With the roughing out done a little more time was taken to shape things with a bit more finesse and eventually I ended up with this although it is not yet fully finished.
The Troll and I dummied everything up again to make sure of bonnet clearance and I am quite pleased now with the way things are looking.

The next stages involve final shaping and then painting resin onto the foam to make it hard.
Once that is cured I can gel the whole thing and then start the prep work for the mould.
With all the curves on the housing it is going to be interesting working out the split lines for the mould and releasing it when the time comes

That's it for now chaps .
More later

Morning All
Right honest opinions please.
Whilst I quite like the shape I have for the housing does anyone else think that I'm losing my way a bit with this?
It is quite bulky at the front (it needs to be for the tubes to go into ) but what do you guys think about the overall shape?
Does it need to be more streamlined at the back are there too many curves is it completely poop and you'd rather permanently fix your bonnet down than show that.
As I say please be completely honest if you have an opinion because I will not be offended at your comments.
Found my self a little bit blinkered thats all.

cheers

Hi Paul
I like it, there are times I want to post a link to a picture of a cling-on battle cruiser but that is because it feels like a darn fine wind-up and not because there is anything wrong with your design. If I was going to change anything I would make it about two inches wider and longer ( bringing it forward a bit and maybe an inch deeper at the sides just to give it bit more volume but that is me looking at function over form. I think that if it were painted to match the engine bay with polished plumbing it will look really very good indeed.
best regards
Mike
