It was right by one end long bolt boss, if that makes sense. It was a tiny flaw as the repair weld is only about 10mm long. Aparently caused by the molten aluminium solidifying too fast.
Strange how it was OK for 18 months though!
I have pics somewhere.

You can see pink antifreeze. Its not a crack but a very small flaw in the casting.

Forgot to mention that when I got the heads back from RS they had reduced the size of the outer bosses so now I need only 3 long studs and 7 short.

Thanks. The picture made all clear. Its time to remove the valve covers to investigate......... well when temperatures get a bit better outside...under the carport...
The warmed garage is still occupied, with another project which is not forum related as it there's a V6 involved with it..

I took the car to different rolling road to have the timing set. They sais it was 336bhp and they would email the results but I never got them despite reminding them 3 times. In future I will stick to circuit motors at Castle Combe.
To me it feels like more than 10bhp extra
Am having some custom head studs made as I really dont like the Bolts after stripping a thread. They are now all helicoiled.

Mark, looks like you have extra pedelstals with Yella Terras. I think I had some problems trying to get them fit.

336 at the wheels?

Hi Jukka
Yes the ally end supports that came with the heads are too chunky to fit with the yella terras. Made thinner steel ones.
Alexchim
336 at the flywheel as I said I have no printout, just their word for it.
Will be back on the dyno at Circuit motors soon.

Well what can I say!
One Merlin head is leaking coolant again and in the same place.
Is it dooable to get it repaired using ally Tig welding?
Was thinking I could bolt the head to my spare block while it is welded to try and prevent any distortion.
Going to run the engine up to temp later then remove rocker cover and try and pinpoint the leak.
RS had them laser welded with the actual weld being just a few mm wide.
I need to get this sorted quickly as I have a trackday in 2 weeks on the GP circuit at Silverstone.
Any advice welcome.
Thanks

Just as an update.
Real Steel supplied a bottle of Moroso ceramic sealer FOC which i used and has done the trick. Engine has been going well this year.

I have a standard 4.6 rover engine with merlin F85 heads. The car is currently being upgraded from webber carb to injection. When i get the car back i will get it on a rolling road and post the dyno results if anyone is interested?
