Tony,

I think the two names already suggested ie Turner Eng. and Chesman are probably two of the best around, I think Turners want around £1200 to do the job properly and that includes finishing the block with the top hats I think, 2 thou. proud of the deck to give an O ring effect for the gasket to seal to.

In the current market you may be able to negotiate the price a bit if you are actually dealing with people who are actually doing the work, the liners are around £320.00 so the rest is purely labour.

Both of these companies may be able to give some insight as to why the problem has occurred.

I certainly have never heard of it happening and unless some idiot honed the bores in the pistons for floating pins still don't understand how the pins could be that loose.

Price is £1250 + VAT ouch!

Kevin.

I don't know what others do but when I spoke to Turners they put some kind of a sealing ring in a groove around the bottom of the liner to seal the bottom end too. I guess a copper O-ring or that other material they use that I can't remember the name of. I think some others just press the liner in with no formal sealing around the bottom, but I could be wrong.

Hi Tony,

Just seen this, gutted for you. Just replacing a couple of liners shpuld be cheap enough and any competent machinist can do it. We pull liners from the block regularly, get all the steel out and you get a better price for scrap. We had a load of old floppy blocks and windowed blocks so we built a tool to do it. Pressing new liners in is simple. Loads of diesels running round with liners not to mention american V8's 2 liners a cheap set of pistons and your spare rods should be a reasonable proposition and not cost any body parts. Good luck mate, unfortunately we only have 3.5 stuff so nothing of any use for you.

Try here for a price:

He skimmed my Rover heads and we got chatting about V8's - seems he's done plenty Rover liners. Gets a good reputation up here.

thanks for the replies guys,
contacted 3 companies today,
told them what needed doing, they said will get back to me later today, and none did,
tried calling V8D 4 times, keeps going to answer phone

looks like my money aint good enough, or is it cos im asking for a quote and not saying go ahead and do it?.

Jago is going to take the block to work next week to see what his boss can do, (engine rebuilder)
if he can get away with 2 thats what they will do, but need to asses the block first and check what damage is there,

Will i notice much difference, if i stuck the stock 9.35:1 4.6 pistons back in that originaly came in the block??
or am i better off sticking with the 4.0 pistons in the 4.6 block?

Hi Tony,
Try ringing Ray on his mobile. I'll pm his number as I don't know if he'd appreciate me making it public. I have to say though I found him very helpful.

Might want to revisit your signature/footer following this little episode.

Disappointing to hear of the lack of response to your requests for costs on work from so called specialists.

Hi Tony
the lower comp 9.35 pistons will be usefull with the supercharger, giving you a little extra margin if you decide to go for more boost later, or if you want to give it a little shot of gas in the lower half of the rev range, if you are definatly going to stick at 6 to8 psi boost and no gas then the higher CR will be fine. The cutouts for the valves will lower the CR a little anyway but as long as you end up above 9:1 you will be fine.
Best regards
Mike

Cheers Mike,
i'll aim for the 4.0 piston route again then
