It's a longshot, but I once had a front cover gasket which didn't have the hole at the suction point properly punched out. I noticed it just before I fitted it. This hole is not used for the 4.0/4.6 engines and maybe someone is now making these gaskets without this hole.
As I say, it's a longshot but check the bolts to the front cover in any case.

Very nice, not much original Moggi chassis on that though ;)

small tip on original style pump if you fill via the pump housing via a funnel and run the dissy drive backwards it will suck the oil from the funnel, then remove and run forward and your have instant pressure.

Tomorrow has arrived, but still no luck. I removed filter and cleaned out all the vaseline from the pump area. I then heated up filter to melt any vaseline in there and emptied it. I then attached a funnel and hose to oil pressure gauge threads and poured oil in. It went down quite quickly, then stopped (filled filter I presume). I then attached drill to pump drive and spun it anti clockwise - nothing. I then turned it clockwise to see if anything would come out the funnel - nothing again.
I've now reached the point where it looks like engine out?
Pissed off.

Before you take the engine out check that the pump shaft is actually turning the cog in the pump. The shaft is an interference fit and somehow may have become loose. A crack through the cog would do it if it has been subjected to a sieze in the past. This is grasping at straws but better than taking the engine out.

At Last :D
I reckon I'd used too much vaseline (not often you hear that). I used a hot air gun to heat up all round the pump area to disolve the stuff, then took rocker shaft off again and then primed with drill. After a while, all of a sudden - whoosh - oil.
Put it all back together and fired it up for 20 minutes at 2k to run cam in - seems fine.
Thanks for all the helpful suggestions folks (apart from scotb :) ).
