ZDDP, I'd never heard of that. One quick google later and some very interesting stuff! I don't know why but it has never occurred to me that oils would have changed so much in such recent times. I mean from the 50's to now sure, but the 90's?!

, the machinist also advised a dab of Graphogen paste on all the metal-metal surfaces too, I've got a tube of that in the cupboard so I'll do that too.

It's my opinion that each type of engine needs a different set of criteria for camshaft installation.
The RV8 and other v8's are particularily prone to camshaft wear as they rely to a great extent on splash lubrication to the lobes. Overhead cam engines however tend to have a pressure fed plentiful oil feed system and can survive some rule bending.
Personally, I'd do the job properly but in the case of the Vauxhall, I'd be tempted to just fit a new set of followers and suck it and see.
