I also killed a rad using the cable-tie type thingies through the rad technique, this was also on a landrover but at the time it wasnt doing much if any offroading, mostly motorway work.
Avoid!
Probably ok as a temporary solution though. My new rad has the fan screwed to the frame that encases the cores.

If you're using the cable tie method, you are better off using some plastic tubing through the fins and putting the cable ties through the tubing. This avods the cable ties sawing through your lovely expensive rad

I did the cable tie thing, even made some rubber washers between the bits and put heatshrink over the ties first but was never happy with it!
So yesterday I took it out and welded a couple of small ally angle strips down it for proper fan mounting, only took about 10 mins but same old sh1t eh- doing a bad job twice or doing it properly once!!!
