Hello Ian,

The SU carburettors that you have.

Are they HIF6? You have never actually said.

The Australian supplier of all things SU is a company called Midel.

http://www.sumidel.com/

I buy all my SU parts from them, including butterflies for my HIF6 carburettors and have never had any problems with quality or fit.

Yes, they're HIF6.

Its worth noting that although the carbs are fitted to my Range Rover, they actually came off an LDV ambulance.

I've since made the mixture a little richer and they perform really well now. In fact i'm well pleased with performance now. Throttle response is superb, exactly the reason i swapped the tired out strombergs out!

I plan to check the plugs for fouling tonight to see how rich it really is however i expect it to be a little richer than it should be.

I just wonder though what effect these butterflies are having. Bearing in mind i've run it now I cant expect burlen to take back used items. My fault for fitting them in the first place but i wont get excited over 12 quid!

i fitted su's from an ldv ambulance and found the needles were completely wrong for a range rover engine, worth checking those numbers if i remember right there is a choice of two needle profiles for rangies!

Hi there, I have a 1996 V8 LDV 400 the SU's on this are actually HIF44 which seems to be a metric version of the HIF6, they don't have anything in the castings to identify them as made by SU maybe the problem is you need HIF44 butterflys?
All the best V8RIOT

Thanks for the bit of info.

I've ordered the bits for the HIF44's so will see what happens. It seems like BL/LDV moved onto HIF44 for the inch and three quarter carbs in the late 80's/90's. Looking at the diagrams i'm now pretty sure this is what i've got!

That would explain why the HIF6 butterflies did not fit correctly,..the carbs you have are not HIF6 but rather HIF44.

My understanding is that the latter have slighly smaller butterflies, so that should allow them to sit correctly and allow the vacuum advance take off point to receive no vacuum at idle.
