Ok Stevie
Want to make some solid mounts for me to try?

As ive no idea what your mounts look like...I'll say No.
On my last RV8, I had Sd1 mounts, with a round rubber bobbin mounting to the cradle...with a stud out each side.
For simplicity when I went steel...I just got some 2" round bar, cut it to thickness and drilled a hole in the middle and stuck a long bolt through it instead.
So the round bar ended up replacng the rubber. Easy job.
For the LS I just made straightforward solid mounts from old 2" stainless tubing I had lying about and some flat bar.
Im amazed they havent broke yet.

Hi Ian
my new mounting are all ready in the making i have thrown away the poor SDI mounts, i have gone for the same design as i used when racing off road years ago. They are similar to the v8 kids Capri but i use Land Rover Discovery front radius arm axle end bushes which locate with a bolt through the middle, they never broke on my Range Rover even at 100 mph when racing off road.
I am off on holiday this week will try and post some pics when i get back
but am much better with spanners then PCs LOL

I had asked similar questions on GT40s forum and the comment is that in a GT40 the engine mounts will take up to 12 times the engine torque due to lift under acceleration
That probably explains why it went bang!
So SD1 engine mounts seem to be in short supply - other than Rimmer
I've also sent emails to contact mentioned above te see if they have any torque info available on their units
Perhaps time for angle iron as Stevie says!

Darkspeed wrote:The wheel torque reaction should be being taken care of by the transaxle mountings not the engine mounts - so if its a case that the engine mounts are used to counter this and the crank torque reaction - then the design of the mount needs a serious redesign as its being used well outside of its original design which did not have that force to deal with.
If the GT40 transaxle does rely on the engine mounts for wheel reaction then I would say that the mounts that Tony is using would be your best route.

ChrisJC wrote:Darkspeed wrote:Torque reaction in the GT40 should be no different - reaction is a rotation of the block in the opposite direction to the crank - i.e Counter clockwise - so the engine tries to tear out of the offside mount - hence why the P6 stabilser fixes the o/s head to the chassis. This is also the furthest distance from the crank c/l so providing the best leverage to the reaction.
Those poly-mounts look like they would do a decent job.
Andrew
Not in a GT40. It has a transaxle bolted to the block, so the torque reaction is from the half-shafts, not the propshaft. I agree there'll be a minor torque reaction from the flywheel, but nowhere near as much as the torque from a brisk getaway....

'SD1 engine mounts seem to be in short supply '
Ian,
Try Morgan - they are the same as SD1 and where I sourced mine. I also have seen upgraded poly ones but I can't find a reference for them right now.
Russ
edit: also the same as triumph TR8.

or TVR (with nice movement limiting bracket 1/2 way down page)

Cheers Russell
Locak Morgan shop going to get back to me -probably not quick!
Why would a TR8 one be £14 and a TVR £27?
http://www.leacymg.co.uk/index.php?prod ... _id=160896
http://www.powerstores.co.uk/?t=si&item=557
They look almost identical (other than colour)
Oh and Rimmer has turned up some SD1 units at £17.50 each plus VAT etc
Was the TR8 engine stabalised elsewhere too thereby allowing a "cheaper" engine mount?
Also found these
http://www.sc-power.co.uk/SC%20Power%20 ... 20Mods.htm
In Polyurethane which may be the way to go at £30 each
Cheers

"Why would a TR8 one be £14 and a TVR £27?"
Because Triumph owners have beards and TVR owners have unlimited funds / deep pockets?
I would say they're the same bit (and probably from the same manufacturer). The TVR ones might (possibly) be stiffer but I think I'd go for the cheaper TR ones and use the TVR motion limiting bracket (
http://www.powerstores.co.uk/?t=si&item=332 ) . It's generally too much displacement coupled with age/degredation that destroys rubber mounts.
Even if the TR ones are slightly softer (which I think is unlikely), then you'll get the benefit of better isolation at low torques with control from the bracket when you apply load.
It would seem TVRs break the mounts also, else why would they fell there is a market for a limiter?

I thought I posted that link for you earlier?
I believe the folks who designed the cage to restrain the rubber versions (quality varied dramatically - as well as costs) are the same ones who then made the poly versions and to my understanding say the cages are now redundant ,well in TVR applications anyway, when using the poly mounts.

Apologies but yes I was just adding the potential sources into one post.
Since then I had Morgan confirm thay can do them at £92 each!
SCARY
I have ordered some of the poly ones - see how they work
Cheers

I now have a sore back!
Well it always happens when I work on the GT as it is so damned low!
The left side engine mount fell off in 2 pieces when the bolts were undone - no wonder the engine moved!
Fitted the Poly mounts - lining holes up was a bugger but got all the bolts in and tight
Went for a run and what I noticed was my gearchange was much improved! (Rod link direct from gearbox so presumably with the engine held tight the torque effect was reduced and I did not miss any gear changes)
In the past when accelerating hard I could watch the plenum moving in the rear view mirror (My guess about 3/8 - 1/2 inch in total power on to overrun)
Today engine movement is negligable
No noticable increase in engine vibration being transmitted to chassis.
I even ran at my terrible 1500 - 1800 rpm range where the efi cannot cope with the reversions and it kangaroos - it was kicking but again engine movement much reduced
So overall very happy with the result
Time to go and soak the sore back!
