What do you mean by balance pipe?- not a connecting pipe between sides like on some old carb set ups? I would love a crossover but would be a complete nightmare to get done- especially in the car so thought I would go 4 into 1 as I thought it's less good for torque but better at top end- but as I have a supercharger I thought I probably won't want any more torque down low as I'l just break things!!!

Yup a ballance pipe goes across between the two systems after the collector, generally ends up going between the sump and bell housing as the 4:1 manifold is brought slightly forward to allow for things like steering. You can also ues an X pipe set up where both sides are brought together and immediatly seperated, both work, both improve torque, the Xpipe is meant to be better for top end.
Have a look at a cross over 4:2:1, slightly easier in some ways if you can get all around the engine, but you end up with alot of exhaust pipes at the top of the engine!!
