Thanks again for the information. Good observation on the tappets. that would drive me nuts!

I've seen that there are oiling issues to contend with in the LS3 lumps:

While a 4x4 may not pull that sort of cornering load tilting the engine by 45 degrees is similar to pulling a 1G corner interms of where the oil will pool.

I'm guessing a budget for an LS3 swap including adaptors to mount to the transfer box would be tight at less than £10k and near impossible for £5k. I'd love to do it, but can't also see it being possible without moving engine mounts on the chassis. I could consider bolting some sort of adaptor frame to the chassis but run the risk of tiliting over 2050kg, at which point if I do go for an IVA the test is as a commercial N1, rather than M1. On the face of it good but then limited to 50mph on single carridgeway and 60 on dual like a van or some 2wd pickups.

I'll carry on reserching the 3.9 rebuild and possible conversion to 4.2. When you say you'd need good pistons are the stock 4.2 pistons (&rods for that matter) not good?

in stock form the 4.2 pistons are a low compression height piston with a lot of dish so you end up with a low compression engine and rubbish squish band. They are also a pretty poor casting. From memory you can use another rover piston by turning down the top ring land by about 1/2 mm to get a higher compression piston, go a google or search this site the info is out there.
