Ok cheers for the info guys I'll probably do the mod, but thinking about it if I had the stat cover with the pipe on it would that sort the issue instead?

Nope, My mate and I believe one or two others have had the issue even with the stat cover with the extra outlet.
Just to clear up any air lock theories the issue went on for weeks during which time the system was drained, filled and modified with breathers many times.
I'm pretty sure my mate spoke to JRV8 about this mod, I seem to recall that Jim reckoned that some other manifolds for the Rover already have these holes drilled, I could be wrong it was ages ago. (Jim reconditions Rover and Chevy lumps for the kit car market)
I still don't know why many engines are fine with the manifold without the mod and yet some have real issues. I guess I'm not too bothered though, I just do the mod as a matter of course.

Just got my thermostat through, it's a genuine one and has a hole and plastic/brass valve so maybe it's the cheaper ones that don't have the hole?
