SD1 Back axle overhaul.

Post by paulmanta »

Does anyone have any data on how to set up an SD1 back axle after a complete overhaul ?

I am changing the diff bearings and the crown wheel and pinion and I could do with any tips, hints or OE data specs.

I think there is a crush washer in there too, any ideas where I might get hold of one ? Rimmers don't seem to have any.

Many thanks,
Paul.

Hi Paul,

The spacers have not been available for years  I know a lot of people who have reshaped them over a bar of steel, not ideal but have not had any problems.

You will need a bloody big socket and spanner to undo the pinion nut and a method to hold it still, this is what i use, a ring spanner, a old SD1 exstention shaft a BMW M30 crankshaft locking tool !!

As far as overhaul req normal axle overhaul skills and tools,

A good friend has uploaded the workshop manual onto the tinter net, i can supply you with a link if that helps, it has a section on setting up and overhauling the 5 speed axle, same as SD1

cheers John

Hi John,

Thanks for that, the picture is exactly what I was after in terms of tips !

I will have a bash at reshaping the crush ring then, hopefully It will be ok.

A link to that page would be great if it is not too much trouble.

Many thanks,
Paul
