Can someone tell me if the P6 crank and the SD1 crank are the same? or is the SD1 crank a better unit, thanks David

I think the lipseal cranks are slightly different but interchangeable. The P5B/P6B crank has a register on the front face that the SD1 crank doesn't have. I don't think SD1 cranks are better than the lipseal P6B ones but they are certainly better than the ropeseal ones.

The rope seals can be replaced with lip seals.

Yes. You have two main bearing sizes - 3.5 / 3.9 litre (dawn of time until Range Rover P38) (which I think is 2.3"), and 4.0 / 4.6 litre (crossbolted block, Range Rover P38, Discovery 2) (2.5" diameter).

They are obviously not compatible with each other. I could be wrong on the actual diameters, but they are definitely different, the later engines being larger.

Note that the 3.9l and 4.0l are actually the same bore and stroke!, just different journal sizes.

Chris.
