Gearbox ID

Post by adamdom »

Hi all

I'm looking to do a V8 in mgb gt and looking for a suitable gearbox.
Ive seen a LT77 for sale with the code CL-13868OC on it.
Is this suitable for a rover V8?
If not anyone out the got one for sale that suitable?

Thanks

Adam

CL prefix indicates it's a TR7 5 speed box. I've rebuilt a few LT77 boxes including TR7 and SD1 versions and haven't noticed any difference internally between them (other than speedo drive ratios). My suspicion is that Leyland Transmission (LT) supplied the same boxes to both the Rover and Triumph division of BL and just stamped the appropriate serial numbers in them.

Going back to the original question, yes it's probably OK behind a V8 in a MGB. Obviously the LT77 has it's weaknesses and if it's worn or badly abused it'll eventually fail but as long as the primary pinion shaft and the layshaft are in good order most of the other bits like bearings, synchro rings and oil pump are still available.
