Huffaker Plumbing

Post by mgbloke »

Hello All
I have a Huffaker inlet manifold fitted to a rover 4.6 with SD1 front cover.
The manifold has been modified by the PO with Ally tubes running out from the head waterways then the thermostat housing points upwards.
There is no provision for a thermostat bypass pipe. I have linked up the old bypass pipe on the front cover to the heater return pipe on water pump.
It seems to work OK, Is there a problem with not having a thermostat bypass?
Its more of a track car than a road car and In the summer i run without a thermostat which really helps with the marginal cooling (MGB)

If you don't have a thermostat bypass then the only flow (before the thermostat opens) is through the heater. If you give it some welly before the thermostat is open then the water pump is working hard and could blow the heater matrix if it's getting on a bit.
Also, the thermostat may open a little later due to lack of initial flow behind it, but a tiny hole drilled it it would allow some hot water to reach it and solve that one.

There is no heater! So until the thermostat opens the water pump is cavitating i suppose. I would imagine the water around the cylinders will get very hot by the time the heat reaches the thermostat.
Maybe I should drill some small holes in the stat so at least water is flowing slightly until it opens.

I have a similar situation (no bypass hose) I have drilled 4 6 mm holes into the thermostat to allow some bypass. Works OK.

Sounds like I have a similar setup.

I dont use a stat in mine as its track only now. I use a restrictor disk that has the same free area as a normal stat when fully open. Its a bit slow warming up now. But at least I have the right flow rate.

When I used a stat I cut a chunk out of the stat flange that was around 8mm x 8mm and fitted the stat so this cut out was at the 12 o'clock position in the housing. This allowed a good flow while the engine was warming up.

Wow Perry, soon you will have a chimney stickin out the hood. Looks cool.
And talking about cool I drilled 4x 5mm holes in the stat and now its running on the cool side again. Will try 2x 5mm holes next.
