I have a Land Rover 101 which originally had a 3.5 RV8 fitted with a fixed fan in a shroud and all cooled well.

Now have a 4.6 fitted with the shorter timing cover, serp belt and viscous fan. This arrangement out the larger fan a lot lower and about 6" further away from the radiator - so about 9" all up from the radiator. Before I make up a new shroud I would ideally like to move the fan closer to the radiator.

So does anyone know of extensions that may be available for these fans and what impact does it have function of the viscous coupling.

I would have suggested an electric fan. Unless you are doing a lot of driving less than 20 ish miles an hour it will never come on!

Yes is an option but do not work well in hot Australian summers in a 4wd climbing steep hills when the outside temp is above 40c.

As set up originally with a big engine driven fan is best and I can build a shroud but would be just a bit easier if the fan was a little closer to the radiator.

Aaaahhhhh a landrover being used properly most in the U.K. would say off-road is bumping two wheels up a curb to park!

I see Rimmer Bros has a number of Shrouds listed but sorry I have no idea what one would work in your application.

Good OEM electric fan and shroud setup would be best.

I really would not want a massive extension hanging out front, for pump longevity reasons, for balance and smooth running of those items etc etc.

So with that not being a good idea, an extended shroud may be your only option.

Can you move the radiator? That would be easier than moving the fan I would think. Then you could keep the shroud?, or get a P38 radiator and shroud and fit them to the fan...

Hi Chris have considered various options - one is using a spacer on the fan. Many cars have them including the 3.5 RV8 and was just interested if anyone has done it with the 4.6 but it would seem not.

I will just make up a shroud to suit.

I would say as long as you have a good fitting shroud reducing the gap between radiator and fan would offer no cooling benefit.

Have you checked out the various water pumps? Some are shorter than others.

I don't believe that is true for the 4.0 / 4.6 (i.e. GEMS / Thor) engines Dave. As far as I know, they are all the same.

This would be my choice.
Move the rad or fit the rad and shroud off the original fit for the engine.
