rover v8 water pump whine

hello all,

how much play should be in the rover v8 serpentine type water pump?

Looks like mine has developed a whine, removing the pulley belt and the whine goes way, spinning the pump by hand and I notice some play in the bearing, side to side, although its not leaking from the pulley area.

Just wondering if this enough to cause the whine, just don't feel like another engine strip down just yet.

Anyone recommend a source of good one, not cheap ebay ones.

cheers
scott

I've never heard one whine - doesn't sound good!
Worth being 100% sure it's not the belt or another pulley / idler bearing.

But water pumps are cheap enough. I get stuff from Rimmer Bros or Island 4x4. You can choose whether you want a genuine part or various flavours of pattern part.

Chris.

Looks like it might have been the belt being a little loose, put it back on and made it a bit tighter, seems better now.

Might just have stretched a little over time.

I will keep an eye on it for a while.

Did you use anything special to tighten the belt?

Its a new 7 rib polybelt, still not sure if its the alternator or the water pump.

Not noticeable at idle, but louder around 2-3k rpm....

The tensioner on the westfield is just a nut that runs against a small rack, when you turn the nut it tightens or slackens the belt.

So no pretensioner in the arrangement, so its hard to work out how tight it should be.

When I ran the engine without the belt, no noise, so its one or the other.

Gonna drive it around for a while, as I don't think its serious.
