Burst Coolant hose

Post by irony »

Driving along in my 3.9l RV8 kit car at the weekend one of the heater matrix takeoff hoses burst off the front cover. I assume the resultant pressure pumped the water from the system. I have a emergency coolant light which came on (admittedly I didn't see it come on) and I looked down at the temp gauge which read 100c. The emergency light comes on at 95c. I pulled over and switched off immediately. I refitted the hose. I refilled the system with water from a local and it took 6 litres. Drove home and it didn't miss a beat.

I warmed the car up on the driveway the following day and it didn't miss and beat and sounded fine. It behaved as normal. I haven't driven it yet. I might have got away with this but what should I be looking out for. Obviously I am worried about head gaskets and possibly worse.

If it's all filled fine, drives fine, works fine....then it is fine.

Just be more paranoid that usual about coolant consumption.

Chris.

The hose wouldn't have just popped off, so I'd keep a beady eye on it for where the pressure is coming from.
Fill it, bleed it and go for a drive, stopping to check for the hose getting tighter.
If it does have a sniffer test done for combustion gases.
Cheers,
John
