Don't think such things 'work harden' simply by being on the shelf - or at least over a reasonable time scale. It's usually things like heating and cooling and vibration which cause this.

Hi Dave
Many many alloys have age hardening properties, these should not be confused with enbrittlenemt through work hardening or other enviromental conditions. The alloy is designed to be soft and ductile for a period of time after manufacture and heat/chemical treatment then over a given period it's properties change as different chrystals precipitate out of solution within the alloy. Ask anyone who puts steel rails down for a living, the time between manufacture and laying and tensioning the rail is a window of a few weeks, one good snow fall and miles of rail can have to go back for further heat treatment, the same goes for bike chassis alloy and many other alloys.
Best regards
Mike
