Who's your favorite stripper?!?!

Post by topcatcustom »

Sorry- talking about taking paint off

What do you think is the best way of taking my Maverick back to bare metal all over? Have been looking at the pro's and cons of blasting and dipping, it basically appears that blasting can warp panels and work hardens the surface, and of course its bloody messy and gets everywhere. Dipping (so it seems) can reduce the thickness of the steel, and I'm guessing its a lot more expensive.

This website has some pretty good info on it but still not sure! http://www.scottgrundfor.com/ideas/paintoff.html

Hi Tom
We use a bit of kit called a Dronco fleece and it is just the best for whipping paint off panels without warping and the disc's prep the panels for primer as they rotate.
We have stripped a Jag XJ6 front wing in about half an hour start to finish.
They fit onto a standard 4 1/2 grinder.
Compare the cost of a dozen of these to having a blast or dip and you can see the sense in doing the job yourself, maybe even ask the GF to help or is that pushing things way too far?

 She would normally get her hands a bit dirty (down to earth!!) but seeings she didn't talk to me for 2 days when I bought the car I might not ask her! Have got plenty of mates who I could bribe with a few beers though

I had wondered about the pads, think I used one a few years ago, only thing is being unable to get into nooks and crannies- maybe I could do those fiddly bits with a small blasting gun and some alu oxide. Are they the ones that look like thick stranded scouring pads (or dried spaghetti  ) with big gaps to stop clogging?

Hi Tom
Didnt talk to you for two days?
What a result
Must try that with Mrs Gelmonkey, always fancied a 69 Camaro or a 41 Willys Coupe. That could result in a month or more of total silence.
You are spot on with your memory. The ones we use are black in colour and last a fair time with easy pressure on them.
For the nooks and crannies (ooh err misses)you could always just use paint stripper rather than spot blasting.
I have a good source for these fleeces and if you need some just give me a shout ok.
Now where's that American Auto trader
Cheers

Mike I DONT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY!!!!! But as soon as I do... It would be lovely starting with a new shell but you would really need a donor for all the bits and fittings, which means as well as $19000 you need to spend a few more on a knackered car! Anyway I'm trying to get this maverick done first- so stop making me drool!

I think I'll go with the pads, I'm going to strip the entire car first anyway so may be worth just getting the underneath blasted as it must be nearly impossible to snad between all the ribs etc, and it will have loads of nasty tar stuff there too... though will probably get just as much grit in the car as if I did the lot anyway!

Do those pads get rust out too?

Official Statement......
KIWICAR is bad for your bank balance.
Tom
The pads will take some out but not all.
Use Kurust gel and then the rust kill fluid over the top once the gel is gone and this will return the metal to a bright finish.

It turns rust back to shiny new metal  lol, does it get behind it and force rust out then?

The fluid destroys the rust and turns what's left back to shiney metal.
Obviously did not explain myself properly on that one
Am having lots of senior moments of late.
And yes, am home in the middle of the day because it's raining AGAIN.
Still temperature coming up and will be able to start making the mould for the splitter soon.
MK 2 ready for moulding yahooooooo...
