Big rear spoiler / wing options

Post by chodjinn »

I'm after a big wing for the rear of my track car and wondering if anyone can recommend anywhere to buy one from? Single plane ideally, with end plates, was looking at the large fiberglass ones used on stock/hot rods but can't seem to find any for sale.

chodjinn, why fibre glass? it's heavy and somewhat out of date. why not go for carbon fibre...may be worth having a chat with Reverie...would have thought they could make one for your quite easily at a sensible price.

Mainly due to cost. Carbon is not cheap.

And reverie are very, very expensive. A comparable spoiler to what I want is the TVR 350 one, and it is £949 + VAT!!! God knows how much a custom one would be.

If I wanted a carbon one I'd just buy one of those 'big gay wing' carbon spoilers from the likes of Japspeed or Driftworks, which can be bought for a couple of hundred quid 2nd hand. That is probably what I will do, but if I can find a cheaper version it would be better.

I had the opportunity to buy a proper GT3 Merc wing earlier this year for about 250 but didn't have the funds unfortunately.

Yes, price...£1000 for a basic CF rear wing seems far too expensive, one can buy a complete 911 CF bonnet for the price. You could try importing a pukka JDM from Japan for a few hundred delivered to your door or why not try here

Hah great! I was actually looking at a Le Mans LP2 wing the other day, but it was over 2k!

That JDM spoiler is the sort of thing you can get 2nd hand for a few hundred here in the UK, probably end up with one of those if I can't find anything cheaper.

If you wanted to you could send me a couple of rough drawings and dimensions and I could possibly make it for you out of glass and very high strength foam.
I do a bit of glassing and making one offs.
I am away from home working at the moment but am back for the weekend and then off again next Monday so if you wanted to talk first give me a pm with your phone number and I will give you a call at the weekend.

cheers

Basically a large single plane wing like on GT class cars;

I can do that without too much trouble I reckon but will still need rough drawings and dimensions hxwxd
How are you planing on fixing to car ?
Two legs or a single leg?
What distance apart for mounting points etc?

Also what time scale would you be looking at please.

cheers

No time scale still building car.

Cross section would need to be like this with dimension "CM" about 25-30cm:

Total length no more than 160cm to stay within body dimensions.

Would be looking to mount it on two stands in a similar fashion to this:
http://www.speedhunters.com/2013/01/spe ... pra-380sx/

Would need two threaded inserts each end to mount vertical wing plates. So pretty much a standard-ish looking wing really.

Price is what I am most interested in. I've been offered a carbon JDM wing as posted earlier for £200, a fiberglass version for £100. I am really tempted with the fiberglass one just to get me going/testing
