Shaved door handles - safety issue?

Hi all,

Ok, so this year I want to start drag racing my astro van.

One issue I have is that the door handles have been removed and the door smoothed over. Doors are opened electronically by a solenoid that pops the latch (button on outside although hidden)

Im probably about to answer my own question, but is this going to be a safety concern?, Likely to get turned away at the track?

If it is ill have to start making changes quick sharp.

cheers!!

Stu

I'd get cracking if I were you.
I can't see the scrutineers letting that one slip past.

Cheers for that.

Had a quick look at various handles/locks, seems that vauxhall corsa ones
may do the job.

thanks

A related question: What if the doors came out of the factory with solenoids and no handles (thinking TVR here)?

I know there are manual releases inside the car, but that doesn't really help people outside get in if there's a problem.

Hi
Having just had an MOT failure on a broken rear door mechanism (and had to do without the car for a week while it was fixed) on the MOT jargon version of car "cannot be accessed from outside by door handle", or words to that effect I am suprised that you chaps are getting through the MOT let alone passed scrutineering. I appreciate the TVR is a special case and will have been type aproved like that but so it is difficult to fail it now but I still do not see how it can pass and mine fail :?
Best regards
Mike

Regards MOT, although it doesnt have handles, both front doors on my van can still be opened from outside and inside using "the relevant control" (quote from the MOT manual), which is why it passes. Probably how TVR get round it too.

Never raced the van before which is why i brought it up. Ah well, on with the modifications :D

You certainly wont get turned away from Santapod Stu...

I doubt North Weald and York will be concerned either..

Santapod do not scrutineer any vehicles for RWYB.

The other two sites only check for secure batteries, wheel nuts all in place, dual throittle return springs and seat belts etc..

At Santapod all you need to do to run is NOT be dripping fluids on the start line and not be driving a vehicle that looks obviously like it should not be driven at all because it looks like a wreck.

If you were running the vehicle in a specific race class at any track then there would be guidelines that you would need to adhere to.

But for RWYB there really arent any vehicle spec rules. Dont waste your time altering what you have just for a few race days mate. You wont get turned away from anywhere for RWYB :)

Cheers for that perry.

Should have been a bit more specific and said it would be RWYB (rather than in a class as you said)

Though i think im still gonna change it to a mechanical release of some sort rather than electrical.
