John is right about Mirka disc's.
We use them a lot for our work but you must use the correct backing pad.
If you use a normal velcro head these disc's will destroy it in minutes.
Cheers
P

We have a very good deal on with a local supplier for these so if you want to try some give me a shout ok.

P,
Thanks for the tip about the backing. We have a cheapy air driven orbital job and it was doing ok, but the discs were not lasting as well as I thought they would have. Will look into it.

They work very well, though....

A quick hijack of your thread Tom if you don't mind.

John, keep the used disc's and use them for hand flatting in the final stages.
A 400grit disc after 10 mins use on a DA is roughly a 1200 grit afterwards.
Saves money and a double usage...... result.
Am off to count all the money I've saved now

Cheers
Paul

Bollox, now you tell me that??

I tossed a lot of them doing a refurb job on a skid gear at work. Ally makes them dull very soon, but they work well till then.

Cheers for the tip, though...

Well spent a couple of hours over the weekend and got it 99% stripped out and on the spit, is a bit high so will chop 6" off the legs at some point but works perfectly :D After a quick height adjustment I can easily roll it over myself 360degs, already I can see it making this bodywork sooooo easy, welding, sanding the lot!

Bit messy but this is almost everything that came out of the car- not much when you really think about it considering the heap is mainly the seats and suspension/drivetrain!

It's going in to be blasted as soon as I can get it on the trailer! Gonna get them to just do the fiddly bits and leave the big flat areas which I will do by hand to prevent the risk of any warping etc- cant wait even though I know it will look like a sieve when it comes back

Hi Tom
This is actually a bit late in the day, but I would stick a brace across the door openings when you have it on the rotisserie for safety sake.
Best regards

Incase it collapses? Bit worrying if it could! 2 of us can lift each end so not a lot of weight there...

BBQ at Toms next summer

I recon by then you'll have finished the yellow peril and we could stick a complete ox on that rotisserie

Big log fire inderneath and a V8 to turn the spit

Now that sounds good

HI Tom
I was more thinking twisting it corner to corner and introducing perminent bend end to end when you start repairing panels that stiffen parts of the chassis/ body with it at an angle it isn't normally at. Remember it is a 30 somthing old body/ chassis, the steel will be no where near as strong as when it left the factory even if tin-worm hasn't got to it. A mini body used to take 2 to lift even without the subframes in and that is quite a bit bigger.
Sorry, but if it were me I would put it on a level surface (or at least 6 axel stands with the tops all at exactly the same height) pop the doors back in and put a few stiffening bars in it before you go any further.
Best regards
Mike

It's only on there to strip at the mo mike, when it comes back from the blasters I'm planning on leveling it up before doing any major welding but braces may be a good idea. And its heavy but 2 of us can lift each end

Ian that sounds good- Perry can bring some nitrous to stoke the fire too!!!

I wouldn't give Tony your address by the way, he'll be over after that axel just lying on the floor. . . . .
