UK New rules for towing a trailer or caravan with a car from autumn 2021

For information the UK are changing the rules for towing if you passed your test after Sept 1997.
Currently you (& me!) are limited to 3500kg MAM (maximum allowed mass) of both the car and trailer. You used to need to take a B+E test to tow a trailer upto 3500kg.
Well they are scrapping this additional test and giving everyone B+E entitlement automatically - to give more testing capacity to training lorry drivers!

Looking from the outside of the UK this seems very strange - it seems odd to link what you can tow to when you received your licence rather than vehicle capabilities and what is being towed. Certainly accept circumstances where special licences are required for particular configurations but to link it to when you received seems odd.

What a vehicle can legally tow will obviously take precedence over what a universal legal maximum is.

And the "when" you refer to, is simply because rules change, same as with any rule change, there will be dates before and after the change.
