Morning all,
I will shortly be receiving my Landrover Chassis back from the galvanisers.
I want to paint it black.

What's the best paint for doing this?
Any suggestions?

Hi Chris
POR 15 is fantastic stuff and can be applied even in damp conditions.
A mate and I did his Mini ( thee complete underside ) and it works a treat.
Not that cheap but works very well.

Chris, +1 for POR-15. I've built many historic cars using this over the past 15 years and all are still near perfect; it's super tough and can be painted over with a good quality chassis black. Frost supply all these [though can be a little pricey]

Now, I've recently ventured away from POR-15 and used UPOL Raptor [available in black and clear for tinting body colour]. Some WRC teams use this and the Yanks swear by Raptor for spraying their flatbeds. My guess is you'll need a specialised primer for galvanised. It's difficult stuff to get the best adhesion to. Be interesting to know what the trade uses with so many car bodies being part galvanized these days.

Hi Chris, I'd advise NOT painting over fresh galv, you want to wait until it has lost it's shine so either leave it outside for a month (!) or pressure wash it with traffic film remover or something along those lines (then key it with a mild scotch pad).

Once the shine has gone paint will stick a lot better, I'm no expert but we've been galvanising stuff for years and have always gone by this advice/experience! I think there is a thin coating from the process which disappears on it's own over time (why galv never stays shiny for long) which does not allow paint to key very well, I'd bet that if you painted it straight away you would be able to wash it off again with a pressure washer over the next few months.

The hot dip coating is so thick that you won't have to worry about a scotch pad or some fine sand paper going through it, we regularly go over fresh galv with a 4 1/2" sander to whip off any rough bits with no issues.

I would use a decent etch primer then something like red oxide (we get it in black too) before your top coat for a really heavy duty job. Best off ringing a paint supplier and asking them as there are a lot of new paints out that supposedly do amazing things! I do have to say they have messed up a couple of times with missing things off the order so service isn't perfect but the paint seems good!!

A lot of people suggest some fancy paint as a one coat wonder, it may work but I can't see how it is better than the traditional method of separate coats on something that will have a tough life.

Given the choice I would use epoxy paint.

I've used plenty of this on my Sierra and over painted it with whatever colour needed

I scraped all of the underseal off my P6, then coated the whole of the underside with epoxy mastic 121. That was 6 years ago, and it still looks like new. Brilliant stuff.
