Hi
Does it have to be a unit for rebuild? just this lot will give you a werrenty
http://shop.partsworldperformance.com/
Otherwise there must be monaros turning up in scrap yards by now.
Or go onto Autotrader and buy a whole monaro, they are under 5K for a used one,

Pull the engine box and Diff out and you still have a stack of usefull bits for any project. . .like big brakes, propshaft to shorten, ECU included, wheels you can flog on ebay you could probably even get money for the glass!
Best regards
Mike

Thanks Mike, food for thought, but i would be looking for an auto one ?
A good used secondhand low milage engine and box would be ideal as i'm a bit limited on space here, john

There's a guy called Gary - known as "Raving" on Pistonheads who breaks Monaros:

I think all the manaros were manual ? i'd need an auto one with the right ecu to control the transmission ? Worth an ask tho !

There is an ebay seller who seems to keep stock of the 5.3 engines ( although cant seem to find anything just now )

This is a different seller though, and an iron block ( alloy head ) unit

A lot of Monaros are auto, as are VXR8's

The Holley EFI system can control both engine and transmission as far as I know, if you were looking to use an aftermarket ecu

If Gary/Raving cant help, maybe try Craig at Dynotorque in Birmingham, he does a lot of conversions

Of course another cheapish option would be the old Lexus LS400. You'd buy a complete car for under £1k with a superb engine and box.

search egay for "chevy ls v8" and similar

There are some 4.8's and 5.3's for sale. Iron blocks again though, and at various prices.

The 5.7's and 6.0's really do fetch a premium these days, price probably unjustified really

Thanks Guys, the Lexus was thought of for a long time as a complete package would be cheap, just to damn wide to get in the front of a narrow nosed pop :(

yes, head-head is wider, but generally the exhausts would sit at an angle and be lower, so dont really add much width.

Whereas a typical 2v does have narrower heads, but then you have additional width from the exhaust manifolds

Just depends where you can squeeze that extra width in.

There was a very good drawing on the net of the LS400 motors, can't find it now, but i remember working out it was too wide for the pop, i've no time to go chopping it about again , JJ, thanks for that info, i've dropped him a mail, john

Hi
Doesn't the LS400 motor have a ballancer running down either side of the block, making the engine wider right where you want ti to be narrow.
Best regards
Mike

No it's a V8 so doesn't need it, but it's over head cam, so it's very wide at the top, strong engine of you got the room !
