just wondering how much gas i can put through the 4.6 before having to use any retard,
The comp ratio is a lot higher now than i was running with the 3.9 engine..

Tony
The general rule of thumb is ....up to a 100 shot no need to retard, after that its 2 degrees for every 50 I beleive.
I'm sure someone will either confirm this or put me straight.
I personally think it's very much a case of suck it and see because each engine will be slightly different in assembly even though they may have the same guts as another engine.

cheers
Paul

Coops!
I accidentally ran 200 on Sunday with no retard :)

And last year I ran several times at 240 of gas without retard.
The times were al the same as well??

As Paul says. Same engines dont react the same way to gas!

Mine should run around 26 degree's all in on gas. But there is still the dilemma of do you advance again at high rpm??

So a 100 shot on your 4.6 should be fine. The ultimate test of course is to do a dyno pass and shut it off as soon as you shut the gas down. Then do a plug reading.

i think i'll do a 75 shot with no retard and leave it at that lol
dont want to blow it up at the ford day now do i lol.
its my comp ratio that worries me running a lot of gas.

also need to get some gas though :-(

Paul!!

I'm old!!

I'm allowed to forget to twiddle the little retard knob on the dash now and then

Last weekend I had gone through my burnout procedure at normal timing. I drifted towards the start line with my sanatogen pumping and then got pushed back because of a car stuck up at the big end. So I reversed and waited. Then I was called forward and forgot to twiddle my knob?
The second time I had done my burnout and when I hit the purge button the poxy purge solenoid stuck open. So I turned the bottle off and reversed off again. I jumped out and pulled the stanley knife off my belt and cut the wires to the purge solenoid. I opened the bottle and all was good. Now I'm freaking because I know I only had 3-4lbs in the bottle and I didnt bother fitting a spare. I must have lost a lot with the purge stuck open. But I thought "sod it" I can run out of gas and still be safe. By this time the Sanatogen was enhanced with Adrenaline. So I was sky high mate :)
So I forgot to retard the ignition and I forgot to turn the line lock back on ???
I launched with 225hp of gas and 250hp of petrol and she hooked fairly well. But 2 seconds into 1st gear she let go. So I backed out and shifted to 2nd gear. Then I eased the pedal back in and as soon as the gas was full on (1.7 seconds) she let go again. So I shifted to 3rd and eased it back in. She still lit them up so I backed out again. Then I waited until the 1000 foot marker around 100 mph and eased the pedal back down again. This was not a good strategy to be honest!!
She actually hooked up and went really well for about 3 seconds and then the back end jumped up and I went a bit sideways??

I have now found a problem with the rear springs. They have gone flat :( So under load my only suspension is the tyres ??

After backing out 4 times I still hit a 12.2 pass which I'm happy with.

But it does go to show that a wanked out stock 4.6 with crap compression will take a shed load of gas eh?
Thats my saving grace I reckon. If my engine was in good nick with 11:1 cr and valves that sealed up properly I might be in trouble :)

I remember about 5 years ago being told by Real Steel that I should not put more than a 75 shot of gas into a stock Rover V8 or it will break

Now we have to examine the law of sod!!

I could build a pristine engine in a really nice car that I drive daily. I stick a 50 shot on and break it ??

Or I chuck together and old spunker that I drag to the track on a trailer so I can take it home in bits if it breaks, and it takes more abuse than it should ever do??

There is some logic to the "drive it like you just nicked it" theory
lol:

i will be out to play this year Pel (as long as i dont break it again)
but i wont be giving you no trouble on the track, im far from your times now,
i can only dream

You is still BARKING
You and I must have a good talk about gas one day.
I have a plan of running a 12 in my car once it is all base lined and there are things I would like to know but I won't hijack Tony's thread.

OLD and twiddling yer knob?
What kind of drag races were you at

I'll pit bitch for you mate.

Paul!!

Number 6 does seem a bit hot I reckon. I've never gone below an 8.
I cant remember what the original V8 plugs are now??
But I used to run up to 100 shot on those.

I find the B8ECS a good all rounder myself.

v8 standard are 6's
i was running 7's up to 75 shot i think,
then from 75 to 150 was running 8's
