Yes, I did one some years back for a customer using an OMVL Dream 21-N ECU, "matrix" injectors and a torroidal tank in the boot.
From memory, the only thing visible when you opened the bonnet was the vapouriser which had to go down near the remote oil filter - only space available! ECU went inside the factory ecu box (offside rear of the engine bay?) and all cables went into the original BMW cable ducts for a super-neat installation. The Matrix injectors fitted under the original engine plastic cover as well. Boot floor needed reinforcement for the tank as the floor skin is seriously thin and flimsy!
it drove well, no noticeable power drop and the customer (a very particular Dutchman from Edinburgh) was absolutely happy with it.

Thanks for that Badger. I have the Dream 21 in my Range Rover (Thor = Motronic), and I suspect the 840 is also Motronic, so that gives me confidence. Good to hear that it can be done to a high standard (i.e. you can't really tell)
