Absolute must have and so cheap these days. I have the typical 150mm (6”) version but also a 100mm (4”), I actually find the smaller one more useful more of the time on the car as easier to get into restricted spaces.

I have two of them. One came from Lidl, the other is a Mitutoyo. They both work well, but battery life on the Mitutoyo is vastly better, even when left on, which is easy to do. Of the order of years, rather than months on the cheaper one.

I've had my Mitutoyo calipers for must be 25 years.
As Dave says, battery life is great, and in general they're very nice to use. Far more so than some cheaper sets friends have including Blue Point.
The Mitutoyo just feel like quality every time.

The very cheap one calipers on Ebay are made of plastic or "Composite reinforced" or whatever. Not really what one would call precision instrument
Generally, this is where quality stuff is worth its price in the long run.

If you just want to measure the diameter of a bolt or roll pin or thickness of a piece of sheet they are fine and surprisingly accurate and 1000% better than a ruler.
if you are actually machining something - then yes, pay more money.

Both of mine are cheapies but are metalic and as accurate as any of the expensive ones i've used in a "professional" capacity, Maybe they won't take as much use and battery life not as good but OK for the garage and as someone else said much better than a ruler.
I think most of the plastic ones only have resolution down to one decimal place in metric but even this is OK for DIY kind of jobs and sometimes being none metalic can be an advantage but I can't think where just now.
