air temp sensor location

Post by Seight-V8 »

hello all,

What's everyone thoughts about the best location for the inlet temperature sensor (IAT).

I have change my current GEMS style metal one for a similar one, but with less metal to heat soak, currently it sits in an inlet pipe just after the K&N air filter.

But I have now removed this pipe & filter and replaced it with pipercross venom sealed air filter, so I don't have the pipe to place it in to anymore

I was thinking underneath the throttle body, so the sensor part is just before the throttle plate.

cheers
scott

If it's a n/a application...I'd just stick it somewhere convenient away from heat soak. It's largely just an ambient sensor in this instance anyway, so doesnt need....and probably dont want it in the actual intake or anywhere it will get skewed by heat soak which would be false readings.

I reckon most will suffer from heat soak anyway, once there is no airflow into the engine to keep it cool.

my other choice of location is in the side of the ACT carbon plenum, very close to where the throttle plate entry is, I was thinking its best to keep the sensing part in the air stream somewhere.

my vems ECU uses this sensor for MAT correction, so it would be good if I didn't heat soak, in it's previous location 40deg temp heat soaks where the norm, so I was trying to find a better position for it.

Just don't want to be drilling holes everywhere to find out the locations are worse.

If you put it anywhere close to the engine, it will heat soak. If you put it in the plenum...it will heat soak even more.

n/a it's effectively ambient, so anywhere in the engine compartment would do rightly. Hence why a lot of OEM's have it in the MAF or air filter enclosure.

It does not need to be close to the engine.

great, thanks for the help....glad I haven't moved it yet....

Just wanted to make sure before I did anything silly, always good to ask.
