What can you tell from my heads and bores?

Post by rich112 »

In the process of stripping my 4.6

It appears to have non standard rockers.

Alas my cam is toast as one of the tappets is badly dished.

I'm running a Holley 390 on a JWR manifold.

Does the state of the combustion chamber, valves and bores tell you anything? A little rich on 7,8?

Here's the knackered tappet.

The colour of the combustion chambers doesn't seem overly different to the ones I've seen. It wouldn't set off any alarm bells for me.

The bores appear to still have a cross-hatch?, but some scoring too? Hard to tell from the pictures.

The bores have some vertical scratches, very slight and the bores are slightly oval.

Just tossing up wether to just run a flex hone down them or send the block off for a proper hone to get perfectly round again.

I suppose you have a problem in that the 4.6l engines cannot be bored oversize (according to Land Rover). This is a bit of a dilemma. I would want to get it rebored up a size and get oversize pistons, but that's not possible!

Turners have oversize pistons for the 4.6. I have a set here I was going to fit in my engine.

Looks like I have a couple of oval bores. 7 and 8 are 0.1mm over 94mm.

I'm already on B size pistons so looks like new liners...

I guess I'd have to do all 8 and then put in new pistons and rings too. It's getting expensive!
