Rover v8 engine code

Post by rich112 »

Hi all,

Got a Rover v8 with an odd code that I can't find anywhere.

Anyone know what it might be?

Comp Ratio 9.37:1
S81D00589A

The only S numbers I found was for a Morgan...

Cheers!

Turner Engineering were able to identify the motor as a 4.6 MEMS export market in a Discovery.

Interesting. Although I am not sure what they mean by a MEMS engine?!

Chris.

MEMS is pre GEMS injection?

All I know is its the 4.0 block cross bolted, 4.6 crank, old style timing cover (with dodgy oil pump!) as its running a dizzy and carb. Possibly a 3.9 cam but who knows!

4.0 and 4.6 blocks are all the same. When built the blocks were given one of three classes depending how close they met specs. The highest spec class all became 4.6 engines, the lower spec class became 4.0 engines and the middle class went into either engine. Apparently a colour scheme was used to identify the different classes and an appropriate coloured dob of paint was placed on the inside of the blocks.

All 4.0/4.6 blocks are cross bolted and they run heavier cranks with larger diam journals which do not fit earlier 3.9/4.2/3.5 blocks.

As far as I am aware 4.6 and 4.0 were only ever fitted with Gems or later Thor injection systems - never heard of MEMS before - most likely of typo of Gems that has stuck.

MEMS was a Rover ECU from the 90's.

Was used on a lot of Rover K series motors according to wikipedia.

So not a RV8 ECU.
