Cylinder head identification.

Post by Nigel Denton »

Not sure if anybody has any ideas but i have a V8 3.5 Ltr rover in my 62 Ford. The Block engine number is identified as a sd1 Auto 9.35:1 and the heads on the engine aren't Sd1 heads by the looks of it.
The heads fitted have casting number 12A then BIRMAL and 612571.

I also Have a set of What I have been told are Vitesse heads these have ERC0216 then 7E652 and have a number stamped on the end 6895. These definitely have the bigger ports and rim flow shaped valves. Also have a casting mark which looks like a stick man.
Ive added images of these.

The final set I have are stock 0216 Sd1 heads these are definitely SD1 heads. Any help identifying the others would be appreciated.

The engine runs but not knowing what the heads are I have no idea of compression ratio etc.
Cheers Nigel

The factory CR is set by the pistons. Of course the heads can be skimmed. There are two stock deck heights, for early steel gaskets and later composite.
Vitesse heads are easily identified by a cut-out in the inlet port face for the injectors.
