Engine number

Hi I'm Barrie and I have a 1978 MGB GT into which is going a Rover V8. The engine was sourced here in AU but the company I bought it from no longer has a record of which vehicle it came from; they thought P38A Land Rover but I can't align the number with those listed so I'm asking here. I belong to the MG Experience but asking there is not an answer. The engine number is 47A09016B -it's now a 5 litre so has been modified since birth.

47 series numbers seem to be either Morgan or TVR engines - the later may explain it being 5 litre.

Thanks Garry.

When I bought the engine back in late 2015 I was sure that TRS said it had been pulled from a Chiamaera. But when I asked TRS recently they denied that and then when I spoke to them a few days ago they reckoned they would have pulled it from a P38A. I think now that not only are their records lacking but they just fobbed me off - so much for after sales service. I looked at those lists before raising my topic and didn't see a 47A P38A reference. I think TRS took it out to 5litres. I might just have to settle on it being either ex Morgan or TVR.

A P38 will have either a 4.0 or 4.6 engine - neither of these start with 47.

I think your original story about the Chimmera is most likely but TVRs are exceptionally rare in Australia.

Yeah I know there's not many TVRs around. My memory is that when I was casting around for a suitable transplant I rang TRS and they said " you're in luck we.ve just rebuilt a motor pulled from a Chiamaera because the owner wanted a 6 litre" so rather than pfaff around anymore I bought it. Of course I never thought until recently about its origin.
