Need help identifying Rover Race-Engine in Formula Car

Post by eugen »

Dear experts,
as a proud new owner in Austria of an 1980 ARGO F3 car (JM8), which was converted for hillclimbs with an Rover V8 race engine I am looking for more information about this engine. It is said to be a 4.5 Rover engine, dry sump, Carillo rods, big valve heads, Cosworth forged pistons. There is only one engine number visible (in the front where the head meets the block - see photo). The usual location (near dip stick, that this car with the dry sump does not have) is blank (see photo).
My online research shows it could be a V8 Tuscan racer spec engine from the factory. The PO had it on a rolling road, the output was 330 bhp. Any insights here highly appreciated!

thanks..............Eugen

I've no idea what it is, but it must be special as it doesn't have the dip-stick drilling in the block!

Chris, thanks, good observation! The drilling is definitely missing in this block. So it is probably really a pure race block with dry sump.
