camshaft bearings replacement

Post by MadMonk »

Hi, I am new to this forum i have posted a small introduction about my self. I have at my disposal a Rover 3.9 engine which has been stripped down so it is as naked as a jay bird. I am now at the stage where i am starting to collate a list of parts that need replacing and the price of doing so. I have noticed that there is slight wear on the camshaft itself. Would it be worth changing the camshaft bearings, whilst the engine is in this state. I have had a good look at them, there does not seem to be any imperfections that I can see. Someone suggested that they cannot be replaced, and a new block would be needed? I will be replacing the camshaft itself along with the tappets. My way of thinking is if I am going to go to this trouble, then would it be wise to change the bearings as a matter of course.
Thank you
MadMonk

It's pretty easy to change the bearings, but you do need to have the necessary special tool to allow you to draw them out. And all 5 are different sizes!
You can download a sketch of the special tool here:

If you have a friendly machinist, he can knock one up.
Just be careful to draw them squarely into the block.

I always do it as a matter of course. And just ensure the oilways line up.

Not sure if it's on the drawing or not, but mine are all tapped M10 and I use a long piece of studding to draw the bearings into place.

You can get various tools

One of many videos

I would NOT try and install bearings without some sort of alignment tool too. And a tool to draw the bearings into place with threaded rod would give you more control....although I would aim more for like M16-20mm threaded rod, than M10.

I tried M12 on my LS a few years back and it didnt stand a chance. Far too small.

Although I did recently use one of the hammer tools as per the video and it was very easy and effective.
