My experience with lifters is that once they are full of oil (which takes about a nanosecond once the engine has started), the only way to get the oil back out is to take them apart! I couldn't bleed them back down in the vice at all.

In my limited experience with the RV8 (two rebuilds) top end noise is either a slipped liner or sticky tappets - nothing else really.
So in this case there would be a sticky tappet. The other aspect to double check is that the rocker shaft posts have been installed the correct way around and that the oilways into the posts are not blocked.

Are you sure you have Crane anti pump up lifters fitted and not the Rhoads bleed down type ?

Yep, it says 99284-16 on the box. I bought a set of Comp Cams lifters, just had not time today to tnker with it. Maybe tomorrow. The wife is away for 3 days so I have plenty of quality time !

It would be interesting to remove a lifter to see if it is full of oil....which it should be. And yes, they should be difficult to drain back down, and would take effort/time

Stevie, I have removed all lifters from LH bank and took each of them apart. All very hard to press down, had to do that it a big bench vise. Oil oozed very slowly out. I pressed them down just enough to get the circlip out. All eight lifters had oil in them. Whether they were full, hard to say. Judging by the feel whilst pressing them down, yes.

Okay, had some quality time with the engine. I replaced the Crane lifters with Comp Cams lifters. Cleaned them, dipped them in oil, installed them and primed them without valve train fitted. Oil through all of them. Fitted the pushrods and rockers. Big surprise ! No change... still rattles.
I'd say there something wrong with the rest of the engine.

Sounds like they're certainly getting oil ok then ?
Does the noise change if you place your hand on the intake plenum ?
If you use a stethoscope or similar...can you maybe get closer to a source ? One bank...both, other ? Maybe a rocker issue themselves ? Although cant really think what.

Real mystery, since you've covered all the valve train things.
Does the noise vary with engine load - like when revving it up or it slowing down? Does it change if you pull a couple of plug leads off?
Valve train noise should be pretty constant (apart from speed). Just clutching at straws, though.

How many shims have you got under the rocker pedestal's ?

Stevie, both banks and front to back.
Dave, yes it varies.
JSF55, only one set of shims. I don´t like stacking them.
No more progress this weekend as I had better things to do. I have basically given up and waiting for an inspiration to pull the engine.

Yes it is. Only components changed are the block, crank, rods and pistons.

Hi minorv8, just come across this topic whilst doing a search on a problem I have with my v8.

Short answer: yes and no.
No, I never found the culprit so I put together a 4.6 engine. Again, using the same heads, cam, followers etc. Basically the same engine I had a year ago, just a different block.
And yes, that solved the noise issue.
