Add a couple of extra litres into the sump so the pump is lower than the level and it should prime fine then drain out the extra couple of litres

I dropped the sump this morning and found that one of the two bolts holding the pickup pipe to the block was stuck to the magnet in the bottom of the sump. I reckon it's easier to suck air through a leak there than it is to pull 20w/50 through the strainer and pipe. Just need a new sump gasket (arriving Monday at my local motor factor) to put it all together.

Excellent. :D As a matter of interest, did there appear to be plenty oil getting to the valve gear?

TBH, I haven't checked, but I think it is all fine. The only time I've checked that is when I've had zero registered pressure and it's not like that now. The fact that the original noise has gone gives me a lot of confidence.

I'm an instructor with the Under 17 Car Club https://under17-carclub.co.uk/ and we're having our annual event to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust at Castle Combe tomorrow so I'm trying to get it working for that.

Those bolts should be at least thread locked or preferably lock wired :) witnessed this problem more than I care to remember on the RV8 :? combination of heavy pick-up pipe and engine vibes all contributors to this issue with the result .... oil pressure woes

I use locker/sealer on every thread that goes into aluminium. ScotchClad 776, as per my very first Rover V8 factory manual. Stops them corroding too, so they will undo when needed, rather than shear, even many years later.

I was going to say that the water pump pulley looked loose, certainly got a bit of wobble.
Good find with the pick up bolt, I guess if left a bit longer has the potential to bugger the whole engine.
I wish I was young again , Id be heaps smarter than the first time

I think the pulley isn't completely straight, I will give the bolts a nip when I'm next in the garage though.
