Always use coolant.

I’m repairing a 4.0 Thor in a Disco 2 at the moment.
Owner reported coolant loss and overheating.
So I’m anticipating head gasket or slipped liners.
I find this horrid bit of corrosion....
( and also some slipped liners).

I’m wondering if we can weld it up and fit top hats?
( or willl I gain another funky coffee table )...

If removing the liner, I dont see why there would be a problem with welding.

Although if fitting liners...surely a decent top hat liner with a larger OD at the top...may remove any need to try and weld anything ?

Cleanliness of the alu would be the only issue with welding that.

Will definitely convert to liners - whichever block I use.

This block has had a long period of running with bad coolant.
The aluminium in this area is very porous, the damage seems to creep down a lot further than can be seen here.
When I get the block out, I think I’ll find a lot more corrosion on this block as I look deeper.

I happen to have a spare standard cross-bolted block available here so I think I’ll use that one if it passes muster.
I stripped it yesterday, and it looks very good.
