Rover 4.6 remote oil filter

Good afternoon,

i'm fitting a P38 4.4 gems in a Tomcat, i plan to use a Mocal oil cooler connecting it to the stock oil cooler inlet and exit using stock oil hoses (surely i must modify oil cooler side connection).

Big problem is that original oil filter (110 mm long) will interfer with front axle when it is in full compression, so the solutions are two:
1) find a very very very short oil filter
2) relocate oil filter. A very known rover parts dealer sells remote oil filter kits for rover V8, but inform that isn't suitable for crank driven oil pump engines. Maybe a remote oil filter will disturb the operation of oil pressure reliev valve?

Really you can do whatever you want...and there are many many filters you could use if you know thread type and dimensions you need.

Cant see why a remote filter would be difficult either.

As said, there are plenty of much shorter oil filters out there.
I think that the Renault 5 Turbo and Sierra Cosworth oil filters are much shorter and fit.

I am planning to fit a remote oil filter to mine.

Chris.

I've just removed my remote oil filter kit from my westfield, in favour of a shorter filter.

Here is the one I fitted, as the chassis member is very close to the filter with the engine is installed, so I went for the smallest filter I could still fit in the space available.

https://catalog.mann-filter.com/EU/eng/ ... /W%20914~2

its a MANN 914/2.

I will probably have to change it more offen than a larger one, but its seems to do the job just fine so far.

Might not work in your case, but don't think there's anything smaller in height.

regards
scott

Tnx a lot to everybody for quick answers.

For the moment i'll leave the remote oil filter as last solution, as probably a short filter can solve my problem.

Renault 5 is the shortest, but really seems too little for the rover v8 high volume oil system.

Mann 914/2 seems perfect, it's just 69 mm high (very similar to sierra cosworth filter), so 40 mm shorter than p38 filter... Probably is enough for my issue!

When you see how small filters are on some modern cars...you really do wonder why some older ones are so big !

I've used the R5 one before, really wouldnt have too many concerns about it.

You could always use a remote take-off head, and a swivel mount, like this one I used

Interesting - where did you get that from?

Chris.
